Mashugana on Wednesday

Though I am not Jewish, I learned the term “mashugana” at a restaurant in Pittsburgh called Gullifty’s, where they make a great dish by that name. It starts with potato pancakes on the bottom, then a layer of hot corned beef, topped with coleslaw and Russian dressing. Mmmwaw! (She blows a kiss to the Chef.) Delicious! I asked the waitress what “mashugana” meant and she said it means “all mixed up, or crazy.” If that translation is not right, please feel free to correct me. I just like the word …

I do not profess to be an expert on this issue, though it is a journey we all take in one form or another. We make mistakes and forget that forgiveness should begin at our own core. We may have what society deems as success, yet we feel empty. And so the journey of “Who Am I?” begins. I look at life as a garden, though it has not always been so.

The next day the men went off to work mixing and pouring concrete and cutting rebar for the new church structure. The women had a classroom filled with children from the neighborhood who eagerly awaited us. I spent five amazing days with some of the most beautiful children I have ever seen. Parents had dressed them in their best clothes and the children were dazzling in their native and natural beauty. We had activities planned and had brought lots of donated toys to give them. They hugged us. They tugged at us. And some parents brought very sick children to us and asked us to pray for them.
