Kelly Thomas: The Beating of His Life…and Death

On July 5, 2011 police in Fullerton, CA responded to a call about a “homeless-looking man” who may have been attempting to burglarize cars near a bus depot. What happened after that is sketchy at best, but we do know one thing: Kelly Thomas was placed on life support and died five days later do to injuries sustained in his confrontation with police. The case is being investigated and details are not being released until the investigation has been completed.

The woman on the sofa motioned for me to come close. She lit a cigarette, held it in a shaking hand and whispered to me. She told me she was the girlfriend but had to get out of there. “He’s doing terrible things, bad things to that kid,” she said.

Police officials throughout the country are making statements at different crime scenes. The reactions to heinous crimes around the country sound eerily similar.  In January of this year, for example, LAPD Chief Kenneth Garner reacted to a shooting by a man who killed his five children as well as his wife, and then shot himself. Garner stated,”In my 32 years, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
