Don’t Cry Over NASA

Fifty years ago John F. Kennedy called for a New Frontier in space exploration. President Obama has closed that program with his 2011 budget.  It’s about time. What more is there to learn? Some scientists would argue that there is plenty to learn, I am sure. My answer to them is let the private sector do it. Bring on the Richard Bransons of the world!

The administration is saying in these documents that “a nuclear attack is more survivable if you immediately shield yourself from radiation that follows a blast.” They suggest that staying in your car or hunkering down in your basement would reduce the casualties by 50 percent. They want to eliminate a natural instinct to “run from danger, potentially exposing themselves to fatal doses of radiation.”

If citizen journalism is to make the strides it should in this vast arena, there needs to be parity of the sexes and a reliable sense of mutual respect. Otherwise it might as well be tabloid writing.
