The Health Care Debate Rages On

Most Democrats realize all-too-well how much “political capital” was expended by the Obama Administration in getting health care reforms through Congress. During the year or so that was dedicated almost exclusively to fighting with Republicans (and each other) over the each and every provision, the Administration had little time or energy to tackle other items …
America: A Nation Divided
Regardless of the future of health care reform, we have become a nation “divided on itself”, and according to President Lincoln, such a nation cannot survive. We must do better!
The MAN-UP SUMMIT
Oddly, Cannon and I agree on another issue, that of purchasing health insurance from other states. Cannon wrote on October 21, 2009, “Congress should break up state monopolies on insurance and clinician licensing. Allowing consumers to purchase health insurance licensed by other states could cover one-third of the uninsured without any new taxes or government subsidies.”
The Obstructionist “Party of No” Must Go
The Senate Republicans, with plenty of help from bumbling Democrats, have finally done it. They have succeeded in paralyzing the government, and ensuring that absolutely none of “the peoples” business will be accomplished in the near future. They did not accomplish this objective through normal “parliamentary” give and take, but rather by stone-walling every initiative with procedural roadblocks. …
Beware The FOX and The Hound of Glenn Beck
Glenn Beck has gone over the edge of reason and FOX is enabling him in the name of Ratings. I find him offensive. His innuendos are unacceptable.
The National Debt Conundrum
In a very real sense, the inability of America’s elected representatives to take even the small step of creating a bi-partisan commission to study the national debt problem is an ominous sign of the political gridlock in Washington.
Obama: A Man For The Ages
most economists admit that 2010 will most likely be a year of slow economic recovery in the United States. During this year, the country will begin to digest the ramifications of the health care reform package, and many employers will position themselves to take advantage of the newly defined “health care landscape”.
Republicans: On the Wrong Side of History
In essence, the power to enact significant legislation has passed to a few Senators (e.g. Joe Lieberman), whose swing votes were garnered by making major concessions to important provisions within the bill. A lasting legacy of the 2009 health care reform debate will most likely be anger among partisans on both sides of the aisle.
States Rights: An Undemocratic Principle
At the local level, the governor and state assemblies are granted powers under the federal constitution to manage their own affairs, so long as they don’t interfere with rights granted under that constitution. When, however, a minority of senators from various states are granted the power to thwart the will of the majority of American people, a line has been crossed that forms a border between good, representative government and gridlock.
Women: Pawns in Health Care Debate?
The further ahead women get, the further behind we are. Whom do we believe and will this actually be a form of health care rationing? It will be fought out on the floor of the Senate, I suppose, but many of those doing battle are men who have no worries about such illnesses, unless they care about the women in their lives.
