Anthem For The Party of “NO”

Groucho Marx once said, “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept people like me as a member.” Look at it this way, the Republicans would not want me as a member, and I totally would not accept membership if offered. Fat chance of that happening given some of the posts I’ve written. I have “issues.” I don’t like all that negativity they thrive on. And let’s face it; they’re boring! They’re all about suits and smug ‘let’s do lunches’ and fat cigars. Me, I like casual jeans; positive thinking; let’s give free lunches to the poor, and think marijuana should be legalized. Life is fun for Democrats, whether they are rich or poor. Throw some burgers on the grill, pop a top on a can of beer, put it in a foamy, and you bring the chips. I would bet those stuffy Republicans only eat at chic restaurants where the portions are so small, you have to follow the drizzle-line of the sauce to find your steak. Do I sound too plebeian? Well, that’s okay ’cause it took me years to tell people that I’m a Thespian! I was always afraid some Republican would hear me and get all confused and picket my house, bringing Tea and such.
Being the kindhearted Democrat I am, I have chosen an anthem for The Party of No. How magnanimous is that? See, we like helping folks out. All they have to do is play this song from their side of the aisle when it comes time to vote on any issue proposed to help the poor, save the environment, end the war in Anywhere, keep Social Security alive, fund small businesses, and don’t clip my pension funds.
So here is my vote, and only Dems can vote on this one because it may be our only chance to be obstructionists. The following is my nomination for Anthem For The Party of NO:

Hillarious “Whatever it is I’m Against It”. sounds exactly right Cher. Great Post and hopefully Some Of Them Will GET IT, Eventually.
OOOOH I’m A Democrat so “I’m Voting With YOU”. No More Teaparties without Hats, Finger sandwiches and Real TEA.
Dear RE,
Thanks for the vote! Maybe we need to show The Party of No what a real party looks like, loosen them up a tad. Maybe then Congress will be able to get things done. “Hat, finger sandwiches and Real Tea.” Love it!
Sheer genius, my sister. We could follow it up with a rousing rendition of The Tea Strangled Banner.
xoxo,
J.
Judie,
You are just too clever! “The Tea Strangled Banner” has a good ring to it. I wonder if Palin can sing?
Wow! A plebian Thespian. I’m sure one of you alone is just a tendency, but put two together and someone would want to make it illegal.
Every Dem should have the “anthem” as part of their campaign.
Chris J,
I hadn’t thought of that. OMG, the GOP may want proper documents from me to show that it’s legal to be a plebeian Thespian in this country! What to do, what to do?…(back of hand placed delicately on her forehead in fear). Was that a bit too dramatic?
The Truth You Speak Dear Sister. Keep the inspiration flowing! More later after I have completed composition of some prose in pursuit of Truth, Justice & what can be the Real American Way.
Sojourner says the Party of No has co-opted the Republican Party body snatcher style. It happened because only a few of them ever had the courage to agree to the radical corrective surgery needed to form a “More Perfect Union”. But like the three stooges from Groucho’s hay day, they forgot to get the necessary mental rehabilitation that must follow surgery performed to correct a hideous anomaly of birth.
i.e. Sojourner says all the “isms schisms” particularly the race, gender and class ones written or silenced into the Our Constitution were surgically corrected by Amendments, BUT and that’s B -i-i-i-i-g B-u-t We The People forgot, refused or just didn’t know that mental rehabilitation was needed to learn new actions that would match America’s new body. The Party of No needs to start gulping down some green and senna tea quick, Why? because these teas have the reputation for eliminating toxins from the mind and body. Its a great cure for any one who is full of ∑h¥t
More Later..
Dear Sojourner Peace,
You have absolutely stated the truth about the lack of “mental rehabilitation” when it comes to the Party of No. They have selective memory and try to change what cannot and should not be changed in the manners they propose. I love your line that “the Party of No has co-opted the Republican Party body snatcher style.” Your perception shows your depth as well as your knowledge.
We look forward to more of your insights. Thanks so much for weighing in.
Hilarious use of Groucho. What a blast from the past. Makes me want to watch one of their movies. Not sure I would categorize all Republicans so narrowly. It’s kind of like saying all Democrats are commie-pinko, bleeding heart liberals, bent on destroying American. Okay, maybe not that bad
I grew up Republican and lived the common man experience of it. It’s not all fat cats and big business. At least it wasn’t back then. Now it is a different story. The Republican party has morphed into an obstructionist monstrosity of big business special interest that manipulates its constituency rather than serves them. Sadly, the diversity of the Democratic party which gives it color and character is also its weakness. It is hard to get such a diverse group to work well together. And because of that the mindless, monolithic obstructionism of Republicans can be frustratingly effective. Oh enough of this political banter. Let’s watch some Marx Brothers!
DCG,
So glad you enjoyed the use of Grouch Marx. I was doing this post in the middle of the night, and when I found the video I was laughing out loud in the office. Best time to write, I think.
You made some very interesting points. I went against my own mantra of not ‘painting groups of people with a broad brush.’ I have voted Republican in my time, but these days I cannot abide their fear and hate-mongering rhetoric. I must say that in my lifetime, I have never seen the country so divided. And this, at a time when we are facing such critical issues which will have huge ramifications. Enough bantering from me. Let’s watch some Marx Brothers as you wisely suggested!
It’s easy to paint the GOP as boring, prudish buffoons when they have such ridiculous mouthpieces as Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and Sean Hannity, but don’t forget that Democrats have plenty to be ashamed of as well. Although effective, the conservatives practice of using fear and anger to argue their points and galvanize their base is detestable, but liberals are no better by using guilt and mockery. It’s my belief that we need to raise our standards when it comes to politicians, and it has gotten to the point that I’m more likely to vote for an eloquent, classy politician who I disagree with than an angry, condescending card with good policy. Either way, Groucho Marx will always be welcome.
Will,
I must agree that both sides are getting a case of the uglies. I just have disdain, though, when it is done at the expense of citizens who truly need help, many through no fault of their own. Each Party needs to be cautious about those speaking for them. I cannot think of anyone worse than Beck or Palin. Even the hierarchy of the GOP is distancing themselves from that rhetoric.
Nevertheless, Groucho provided us with some comic relief and I think we both welcome that.
