Near Death Experiences: Dannion Brinkley

6 June 2010 10 Comments

I recently read an article by Patricia Sheridan of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in which she interviewed Dannion Brinkley, author of the NYT bestseller “Saved By The Light.” What he discussed regarding his NDE (near death experience) was so intriguing that I decided to look at more of his perceptions. There are not many of us who are not at least a little curious about NDE. He speaks and writes of these experiences but allows each of us to walk away, discerning in our own minds what could be possible; what could not.

Who says that lightening does not strike twice? Dannion Brinkley was twice hit by lightening, has had heart failure, open-heart surgery, a subdural hematoma, brain surgery and a grand mal seizure. Not all of these happenings caused NDE’s, but according to Brinkley several did. In 1975, for example, He was talking on the phone during a thunderstorm. A bolt of lightening hit the phone line, sending thousands of volts of electricity into his head and down his body.

In his book “Saved By The Light, written with Paul Perry, Brinkley describes, “From immense pain I found myself engulfed by peace and tranquility. It was a feeling I had never known before and have not had since. It was like bathing in glorious calmness. I had no idea what had happened, but even in this moment, I wanted to know.” He goes on to describe hovering about fifteen feet above everyone, looking toward the ambulance and to his watching his own body twitching and jumping. Then he describes a tunnel “opening like the eye of a hurricane and coming toward me. I actually didn’t move at all; the tunnel came to me.” He felt a Being of light and feelings of love that intensified “until they became almost too pleasurable to withstand.”

Well, you would need to read his books for more detail, and there is a lot of it, including prophecies Brinkley claims were actually fulfilled. Some of the scope of his interview with Patricia Sheridan was particularly interesting. At one point Brinkley stated, “You will watch the 360 degree life review from a second point of view. You literally become everybody you will have ever encountered in your life and you will feel the direct results of that encounter. Not what you think happened or thought you were doing, but what really happened.” He goes on to say, “…it’s not what you did. It’s why you did it. It’s important what you do in your life, but it’s never as important as why you do it. I beg people to look at their intentions over and over during the day.”

Perhaps the words that had the most impact on me during the Sheridan interview were when Brinkley said, “When you leave this world you will have left a divine mark and the life review gives you an understanding of that. When you see the effect you have had on people, as if you were that person, then the divine mark of your kindness and caring begins to shine brighter than any other event.”

    Dear Cher,
In July 1998, I nearly died in hospital. I remember experiencing an overwhelming sensation of being a part of everything. As I came ever so close to the end of my time on earth; I heard the sweet sounds of birds landing on water and of children laughing. Then I heard the voice of my dearest friend, Rob, who had sadly died just two months before,’Buddy’, he said, ‘it’s not your time, yet..’
Somehow, despite being so close to death, my last strand of resilience grew that much stronger. Indeed, I was humbled by what happened to me. My appreciation for my time on this planet has become deep and profound. I can very much relate to this thoughtful and inspirational posting you have submitted. I thank you for this posting.
I did a blog about my experience. I titled it ‘A Near Life Experience’. For it had been a long time since I had truly experienced life just as I was about to die.
    With respect and kindness, Gary.

    Dear Gary,
What an incredible experience. I am so sorry you almost left us, but thankful you are here to share your story. Perhaps your friend Rob, through divine intervention, helped you to come back and savor this gift. Thank you, dear friend, for sharing this.

Interesting that he says we should focus on why we do things.
I’ll have to think about that. For me, every action we do, no matter how altruistic it is, comes back to us, because we can only govern how we act and behave. Ultimately it’s about how these actions make us feel that somehow steers us.

    One of The Guys,
Interesting thoughts. I do agree with Dannion Brinkley, though, in that ultimately it is about how others are impacted by what we say and do. I like the idea of a sort of fast-paced 360 degree look back at our lives through that lens. I wonder how we might or might not change things we said or did if we see it through the eyes of others….

I agree on the importance on putting the focus on the why of what we do things. Imagine the mindset of suicide bombers. What must they be thinking? How many believe as I do that very severe punishment for suicide bombers would cut down on the instances of this horrible act. I believe these suicide bomber would think twice before doing it not wanting to spend the rest of their lives behind bars.

    KAK,
Imagine if they could see and experience the horrors of those bombs as the victims do. That is the part I find so fascinating.

It’s a very surreal experience … I often wonder if people’s near death experiences are as varied as the people who have them. I’ve had about 3 and it did change my life permanently … almost as if one has touched the hand of God in a way. Mine was so down home funk yet … packed a zillion bits on information into a split second. I usually laugh through it now… It’s so unreal. Anyway Peace

    Beth,
What interesting insight you have given us. I’m so glad you survived. Being “touched by the hand of God” would be enough to change anyone’s life forever, I would imagine. He most certainly must have a true purpose for you here on this earth.

I had a near death experience. It was brilliant, like being on ecstasy. I thought I was the sexiest, wittiest woman in the world and all the doctors hovering round me were utterly gorgeous too. But them I vomited on one of them and had to be put under and whipped off to theater. I still remember it as being a happy time though!
