North Korea : Behead the Monster

Back in the 1960′s, singer-songwriter Bob Dylan wrote the line “. . . when you ain’t got nothing, you ain’t got nothing to lose” in his song “Like a Rolling Stone”. This sentiment seems to be the case when it comes to the country of North Korea. Under the leadership of the very reclusive and psychologically-challenged Kim Jong Il, North Korea has become hopelessly isolated, unable to feed its own people, and completely hobbled by an irreparably broken economy. In short, North Korea has just about nothing left to lose by continuing to taunt its neighbor to the South, and by thumbing its nose at the rest of the world. A case in point was last month’s sinking of a South Korean vessel in international waters off the North Korean coast. The obvious response to the unprovoked sinking, a military attack, was ruled out by the U.S. and South Korean governments not because they would not win, but because neither country could afford the full-scale war into which it might develop. The fact is, that even with its shortages of fuel, and equipment, the fanatical North Koreans could do a lot of damage before it was finally defeated. We all know that North Korea is “cruisin’ for a bruisin’”, but no-one has yet been willing bear the cost of ending Kim Jong Il’s thirty-year reign of terror.
Over the course of many years, the nations of the world have tried both economic sanctions and diplomatic arm-twisting, all with little or no results. The reasons for this are crystal clear; North Korea (i.e. Kim Jong Il) has no friends left to isolate, it has no standard of living left to uphold, and it has no concern over the millions of its own citizens who have died from starvation over the last ten years. In fact, after the nuclear test last May, military and economic sanctions were tightened against North Korea with absolutely no effect. The only country with any leverage at all over North Korea is China, and even the Chinese are becoming wary of Kim Jong Il’s antics and fanatical behavior.
And so, the “beat goes on”; the North Korean people continue to starve, the South Koreans continue to tolerate acts of aggression, and the world continues to watch as Kim Jong Il develops ever more powerful weapons of mass destruction. As North Korea advances to become a more and more powerful menace to peace in Asia, it will only be a matter of time before the nations of the region recognize that something must be done to protect their own economic interests and well-being. The only thing that would be effective would be a complete and total blockade of any goods (including fuel) entering or leaving North Korea. After an indeterminate period of time, the North Koreans would become so weakened that a land invasion by the surrounding nations could be undertaken successfully and swiftly. The key to eliminating the North Korean threat is the united participation of the surrounding nations, acting together to preserve their own economic interests. In this scenario, the participation of the U.S. military or NATO forces would be neither required nor desired.

Pride and power are awfully hard to give up – and it probably gets worse the less material wealth one has.

I think he’s just ronery…
Kim Jong Il, breaking into song:
I’m… so… ronery, so ronery
So ronery and sadry arone
There’s nobody, just me onry
Sitting on my rittle throne
I work rearry hard, to make up great prans
But nobody ristens, no one understands,
Seems rike no one takes me seriousreeeeeeeeee
So I’m ronery…. Poor rittle me!”
OK, I admit that this makes no sense whatsoever, unless you’ve seen the movie, “Team America: World Police”.
Not everything can be “Citizen Kane.”

China, no matter how they feel about North Korea, would never stand for military action so close to their borders.
Here’s an interesting tidbit I gleaned from from reading Mao: The Unknown Story: the Korean War was prolonged by Mao for three years after the North Koreans were ready to stop, with the sole aim of frightening the Russians into providing him with nuclear weapons technology. This was also the reason the Chinese had to starve while their food was exported to pay for it. So you could say that North Korea was founded on nuclear chess games, and still has them in its veins.
This is obviously something the Chinese are well used to, and watching Kim rattle the chains of the rest of the world must amuse them to no end.

Chris J,
The combination of pride, power and psychosis in Kim Jong Il has left the North Koreans with nothing left to lose but their lives. This small country is almost surely headed for war.

bluzdude,
Unfortunately, Kim Jong Il is no joke. He has the power to kill millions of his neighbors, and will probably provoke a fight if he feels “dissed”.

Carpetbagger,
I’m not so sure that the “new” China is so amused by the North Koreans anymore. The Chinese economic powerhouse has brought a new level of prosperity that I’m sure they would not want to see threatened. I wonder if the Chinese military would get involved if the North Koreans launched an all-out attack on South Korea; and on whose side?
