CHERLOCK’S QUIPS AND CANDOR
Chicago is burning with violence but the Obamas want the 2016 Olympics there. Can the flames be doused by then?
Debra Winger is one of the Hollywood celebs ranting that Polanski be set free. She is a Hollywood has-been and he is a roman candle that needs to face the law.
General Stanley McChrystal is making the talk show circuit. Is it proper to go over the Commander in Chief and express policy issues on 6o Minutes?
“Bring out ya dead!” Parents are refusing to get basic immunizations as well as flu shots for their children. In this form of parental neglect, they are putting not only their children at risk, but yours and mine. Send those children home and fine their parents. Yes, boys and girls, a pandemic is looming. We need Mr. Rogers back.
In Pittsburgh: Some communities want to impose a $35.00 annual fee for residents and businesses with alarm systems. This strikes me as strangely ironic.
Gun Control? Surely you jest. The only people who don’t have guns are some law-abiding citizens. Well, okay, many law-abiding citizens have guns too. I mean, what’s the point? It’s High Noon. See above mention of Chicago.
WWOD? Translation: What would Oprah do?

I don’t see how Chicago will be equipped to handle the Olympics. It’s hard for any city to accommodate the massive crowds, let alone one that can’t seem to manage the people they already have.
As for Debra Winger, it is unbelievable. Surely she can find a better cause to support. Hollywood seems to have forgotten that a crime is still a crime 30 years later, and the small fact that he confessed to it, no doubt about guilt on this one.
Immunizations, that one gets me. These people have the “luxury” of choosing not to get their kids the shots knowing that the odds are still pretty good that their kids won’t get many of these diseases because of the majority of us who do get our kids immunized.

Tina T,
From what I am reading, many residents of Chicago do not want the Olympics. So many young people are dying in shoot-outs in Chicago that it seems like the Wild, Wild Mid-West. I would hope they can get that under control before committing to an Olympics venue.
Winger should find a cause worthy of support. And I do not understand parents who will not get their children shots, most of which are free if cost is the issue. They put others at risk, especially with the flu.

Handguns are illegal in Chicago… that’s why the thugs have them.

Harrison,
Those who don’t have guns in Chicago soon will, one way or another. Many residents there have a half-shelf life expectancy.

Too much organized crime and overall violence in most parts of the USA. Don’t understand how people still can defend bearing guns.

And as disturbing as your list is, it barely scratches the surface of all the crazy things going on in the US & world right now. But about Chicago? I’m in the rural neighborhood and have lived in that city (I could say, warts and all, beloved city) but I cannot for the life imagine what kind of awful years until the Olympics the residents would be in for nor can I imagine some of the changes this would bring. My brother lives there and is against it. I’m more of a visitor so probably wouldn’t notice the preparations too much….and I have always wanted to see this before I die…maybe this will be my chance?? Sounds like we’ll know on Friday!

Yikes…I would be shocked if Chicago is allowed to have the Olympics given its crime rate.
Then again…everything shocks me these days.
This immunization calamity is more confusing than not. The rumors and opinions are so diverse and far and in between…I am not sure what or who to believe on that one personally.
Guns have never been legal in Canada and I have argued with many Americans against having them legalized.
On the flip side of that…
it seems that legalizing is only for the innocent anyway…if a burglar wants to get in…no amount of security will keep him out. If someone wants to find a gun…they will find one …legal or not.
Personally I believe…the less guns the better. Although I have never experienced anyone attacking me either. That in itself could possibly change my way of thinking.
So much of what we believe and stand by is from our upbringing and our Countries traditional rulings.

Oh…on Debra Winger…she died last night…I watched Terms of Endearment
Now lets see how fast that rumor flies around….seriously I believe we are meant to live in a world of hear say and rumors just to keep us preoccupied and confused.
It is called population control !

Hans,
I believe crime is increasing in many countries due to the global economic downturn. Desperate people do desperate deeds.

Through the years I have heard so many wonderful things about Chicago and wanted to visit. In the past year, however, forty young people have been gunned-down. It has put a pox on that city and my hope is that community leaders—and anyone else who can help will do so. The Olympics would ostensibly provide more jobs for the under-employed and that might help. I do believe the core issue may be lack of family structure.

Tiff,
I just don’t know enough about the HPV. I would think, though, that if your pediatrician recommended it, you should voice your concerns and get some answers. That vaccine was introduced, I believe, because it was determined that it was a safe way to ward off cervical cancer as the girls get older. I am all for that. Doctors have the responsibility to address your concerns. I would be careful about reading about it on the Internet. Lots of bad info out there. You are a conscientious mom, so check with you pediatrician and have him/her address your concerns. What a good mom!

Dorothy L,
Well, you made me laugh with the Debra Winger comment! And how about that scoundrel Woody Allen cheering for Polanski? I have refused to watch any of Woody Allen’s films since he molested, then married his step-daughter. Disgusting.
On guns: I have love/hate feelings about that. It almost seems as though the inmates are running the country and forcing us to arm ourselves. I dread to think where this is going.
I used to like Winger’s Tems of Endearment film, but will never watch it again, especially since she died, figuratively at least by supporting Polanski.

Yes, we’re worried about the gun situation. On the one hand we are not proponents of owning guns. But with some trying to force the country backwards, there might come a time when we need them. Scary!
Immunizations. Not sure why parents don’t do this. A regular flu shot is part of the school year. Maybe these parents think the guns they own will protect them from all the diseases too. We might be on to something.
However, the Swine Flu immunization is a tricky one. Companies were granted immunity from any lawsuits in order to speed up production. And some of the “ingredients” are quite harmful.
Debra Wingnut……oops Winger. We still like her.

The Guys,
Interesting comment on guns and I think you pretty much expressed the way so many of us feel.
I loved your take on guns and immunizations! I our city, schools are indeed sending students home until their shots are up to date. It is a way of putting the figurative gun to their parent’s heads for being irresponsible. I’m not sure about the Swine Flu shot, but if I had young children, I would probably have them get it. Those children, along with pregnant, women seem to be most at risk. Too many kids, including teenagers, have died from this flu.
Debra Wingnut? LMAO!

I think there is a lot of over-reaction to the whole thing about immunizations and Guardasil issue. A few prople experience bad reactions, by far within the margin of error for these tests, and everyone paniccs. If I had daughters, I’d get them the HPV immunization, no second thoughts.
I’m not a gun guy, but I understand it’s part of the culture. If I were king, I’d ban the handguns and have them traded in for shotguns. Or croquet mallets.
I’ve had a croquet mallet beside my bed ever since 10th grade. I was babysitting my younger siblings and the house started creaking… this weird sequencial creaking that sounded just like footsteps in the hallway. I realized that I had nothing in my room to use as a weapon that was any more dangerous than my steel-toed boot. the next morning I went out to the shed and grabbed a croquet mallet, thinking that if anyone came in, I could whack him straight in the wickets. Never heard the house creak again after that, so I’ve had it by my nightstand ever since. Alongside a Louisville Slugger though. The mallet is strictly a talisman now. Louie means business.
“Bring out your dead”… and recently kneecapped!

bluzdude,
Wow, brilliant comments! Yep, croquet mallets are good and I do like the idea of a bat by the bed.
Not long ago there was a discussion on Blog Catalog. The question was “What do you keep on your nightstand beside your bed?” Well, you know I’m a little goofy, right? So I said, “Pepper spray.” Later I thought maybe that wasn’t such a good response because someone might think I meant to use it on my husband. But when I was a Private Investigator I had police-issue pepper spray. It’s in a real nice leather case and still chalk full of flavor. So I keep it on my bed-stand in case someone by-passes the alarm system and various other things.
Just FYI—Rich is totally safe.
