I don’t know. There are days when I read the newspaper in the morning and want to reach for some chocolate, a big fat gooey doughnut, a latte loaded with whipped cream or some potatoes fried in loads of butter. I want to clog up my arteries the way the news stories clog up my head. Counter-productive, I know. But what the hell. The stories just seem to get worse by the day.

For example, the G20 is going to meet here in Pittsburgh in September. Meanwhile our state budget in deadlock status and the owners of the Hilton have left work undone in renovations in a premier locale in downtown Pittsburgh. It is an eyesore. The city is a beautiful place but this company is holding the city hostage with its disreputable business practices.

The WHO is pushing priority for the swine flu vaccine which won’t be ready till the end of the year, long after flu season has started. We don’t even know what side-effects a vaccine may have but many will be encouraged to take it. Frightening.

The parents of 16 children, some of whom are special needs children were gruesomely murdered. Good people doing good deeds murdered in a home invasion. Sickening.

“Germany Acts on Nazi War Crimes Case” another headline reads. That’s good, but what about the stench of war crimes here which may have been committed but some people want to ‘turn the page.’ Where is my doughnut?

Turn to the business section and there was a letter to the editor which proposed getting rid of older workers in the workforce because they are “crud in the sewer lines, requiring that they be unclogged from the employment pipeline.” It went on to talk about “getting rid of older workers as soon as possible for no other reason than they are in the way.” I am clutching for digitalis. Don’t these folks know that in a blink of an eye they will be “older workers”?

I don’t know why these issues are getting to me today. Maybe the fridge needs to be re-stocked. I need comfort foods to help me digest the news and its high caloric content. Hey! Put lots of whipped cream in that latte, will ya?

  1. here (passing the trader joes’ ginger and chocolate cats for people cookies) have a few of these to hold you till the mac and cheese is ready. obtw, we can have some lasagne for dinner, since Obama is in Warren MI tonite, and that’s what they tried to serve him, but of course he was in a hurry to rush back to DC for Din Din.. Uh Huhhh..

    gimme comfort food is right..

  2. admin says:

Thanks, RE, I needed that! Lasagne for dinner sounds good to me. Comfort food, lots and lots of comfort food!

  3. FishHawk says:

What sickens me is hearing about how our government had been doing “stuff” the last eight years or so that had Stalin dancing a jig in his grave. For I was (and still am) all for going after Bin Laden and his bunch with everything we got, but good guys should never cross certain lines. For when they do, they cease being the good guys.

  4. admin says:

    Dear FishHawk,
You are so right. At some point we stopped being the good guys. All the subversive activity served no one well and gave our country a black eye in the world. I’m afraid it will take many years to regain our credibility and more than that—our honor. We cannot very well promote democracy when we hold people in Gitmo for years without the right to habeas corpus. I thought we were supposed to show other countries what true RIGHTs are.

  5. Politicus says:

We have indeed lost our right (at least for a few years) to lecture and preach to anybody, after the last eight years.

To regain our “moral high ground” will take more than rhetoric and money. Honor is not something to be taken lightly, nor is it easily regained once lost…

  6. admin says:

    Politicus,
How very true. There should be no moral relativism when it comes to human rights and the honor of one’s country. Certain truths are “self-evident” and must not be forsaken in the heat of fear, anger or vengeance, even when we have been attacked as we were on 9/11. While I understand to some extent why actions were rationalized and justified, I will never condone it. Those in whom we have placed our trust to represent our nation are duty-bound to uphold the sanctity of our values. Paradise lost is not easily found.

Yikes…..Ignorance is bliss and I am sending you some just until you can recoup your energies and remember that none of this is in our control.
Cher…you are committing food suicide for things that are not your fault nor your responsibility.

D…steals your computer…television and all other sources of media.
Oh and she kidnaps you and sends you to a resort where ignorance is truly bliss and is in fact what the doctor orders:)

Huge hugzzz for you sweet Cher :)

My loverly D—that was a song, you know, back in the day—or maybe it was lovely D! You are such a lovely person and beloved by those of us who follow you.

I must say, however blissful it would be to be sent to a resort and totally escape for awhile, the problems will still be here when I returned, and I would worry about them the entire time! Well, okay, not the entire time. :) The point is that (hold on here) I am an intense person, intensely concerned about the state of our country. I still cling to the belief that we truly can change some things if we raise our voices, especially given the mass media available.

So I will compromise with you. I’ll eat a few chocolates, have a couple of Coco Locos with my husband and regroup to fight another day.

    You are my solace, though.

    Hugzzz back….

    End of times !!
    The sky is falling !!
    Help ! Iv’e fallen and I can’t get up !
There was a country song out a little while back about hitting rock bottom, and she said that there was only two ways to go, straight up, or sideways.
I believe we are in the sideways motion right now.
    Please pass the Cheetos

I don’t take or read the paper any more. It is full of negativity and that’s what’s wrong with this world today. If they would print uplifting news then and only then, would I start reading it again. Thanks for this post and I hope you don’t eat too much of that junk food. lol

  11. admin says:

    Rob,
Actually, there are those who would say that we are in the End Times. Who am I to say? I love your analogy of sideways. Maybe that is the direction we need to take before we can stand upright again. It took awhile to get to the bottom, so the climb back up (even if we never again reach the summit) will be arduous.

Here you go…have some Cheetos. It’s going to be a “bumpy ride”!

  12. admin says:

    Eddie,
You know, there are days when I tell myself that I will not read or watch the news. By early evening I am going into withdrawal and afraid I might have missed something BIG. My real problem is not that I am a food junkie, but I’m a news junkie! Okay, I’ll have a salad today with a wine chaser.

Your line about Franken had me on the floor! Yeah, we need to “chuckle and pray at the same time!” RE, you should be doing stand-up in L.A. I would pay to see you and D and I might be some of your biggest cheerleaders!

You stopped by even without Entrecard. I am honored and will get you Cheetos AND some of that Coco-Loco the Mister just made for us on this hot summer day. Hold on, I think there’s some left…cheers, to you, RE!

  17. admin says:

    Eddie,
You are in my thoughts and prayers. I know this is not an easy time. Take care, my friend….

  18. Dorothy L says:

    LOL@ RE & Cher

I thought it would be a bad thing to even admit how many times I have commented and forgot to drop.
I see that it is a good thing:)

As long as the Lasagna is meat free I can roll with it :)

Cher..a bit of my philosophy when it comes to being a person that feels the need to be there….I feel that because they only tell us what they want us to know(a way of controlling the people) (also how I have always felt when it comes to news of any kind from anywhere) that you should only believe half and that way you only have to worry half :)

So my dear..I can accommodate you with maybe a radio for 1 hour a day and that would be all you would need:)

Remember only half and even sometimes half of that is what is really true facts!

To spend actual’ in your space and in your face’ time with you two fabulous Diva’s would be something worth saving my pennies for :)

Let me know…I am there :)

    Love you both!

    Huggz~D~
