It looks like Speaker of the House John Boehner is up to his old tricks again, threatening to block an increase in the federal debt limit ceiling without obtaining significant new cuts in spending.  There is little doubt that the last two years, which resulted in over $1.0  trillion per year in deficit spending, will bring the country close to …

Pilloried By Hillary

Submitted by on March 10, 2008 – 8:22 pm9 Comments | 2 views

What in the wide, wide world of political thought-jogging is Hillary thinking? Does she really believe that Obama would consider the VP position when he is out-swaggering her in votes and delegates? It is a bit audacious for that to be suggested, but it will take more than such chutzpah to get Obama off his game. It’s time to volley! Will someone please tell me why having been Bill’s wife qualifies Hillary to be President? Or is the public saying that they just want Bill back? More and more this feels like theater of the absurd.

I will tell you one thing. I live in Pennsylvania and no governor nor backroom, cigar-smoking politician will determine how I will vote. What do endorsements really mean? Well they mean that deals have been cut for ladder-climbing, back-biting and other such politico sports. Who among us thinks for a moment that endorsements are for the good of the populous? My advice: read, think and analyze. Don’t be fooled by hype or hyberbole or you too will be pilloried.

    Dear Cherlock,

You ask why Obama should be a vice President. Where else but here could someone ask such a ridiculous question? Isn’t the top person on the ticket usually the one with the maturity and experience? Even supporters of Obama can’t name a single accomplishment of his.

Have you watched Hillary lately, Paul? Have you seen her grandiose, arm-sweeping gestures as she calls for the skies to open? Did you watch her ire when she stated vehemently, “Shame on you Barack Obama!”? This is a woman we want to defuse hostility on the world stage? She has no grace under pressure. Furthermore, those who read and listen to something other than slander know that Barack Obama has a history of bipartisan success. In addition, Obama called for a phased withdrawal of troops from Iraq in 2005, not just when the winds of campaign rhetoric changed. His ethics reform legislation was hailed as “the most sweeping since Watergate.” The Washington Post said, “Obama deserved credit for the strongest ethics legislation yet.” I don’t know about you, but I am certainly for more ethical conduct from those who ostensibly represent us. Barack Obama is grace under pressure and that shows his maturity. In the volatile world in which we live, he is exactly what we need.

Thanks for your comments, though. You gave me a chance to vent!

    Yeah Yeah Cherlock,

You convinced me. I am now a believer in politicians. If you subsitituted the name Eliot Spitzer for Barack Obama in your above post, it would make just as much sense.

I think you misunderstood me. I said Obama has grace, not disgrace!

The People need a uniter, like Obama; Hillary represents more of the same old devisive politics, designed to let the upper class keep their status quo, at the expense of the working poor.

Schools across the nation are laying off teachers, while the treasury spends twelve Billion dollars a month on this Iraq occupation. BTW, these these cuts in education are affecting imortant programs, which have been proven to work. In education, there is no “fat” to trim; these cuts hurt the future of our great country.

Obama’s run a clean, honorable campaign; no mud-slinging, he doesn’t resort to the negative tactics with which Hillary has become comfortable.

This young Senator has what it takes to be Commander In Chief. The prospect of having hillary hold the highest office in the land actually worries me.

Her voting record is in line with the GOP agenda (No Child Left Behind, Iraq invasion…), and i think she would rather support McCain, than see this candidate from her own party succeed.

Why is it fine for Obama to sit and listen to racist, anti-American rants from his good buddy the pastor? Most of us would have gotten up and never come back. He, now, rejects these views. Would you, Cherlock, keep going back to a church if the pastor was a KKK member and ranted its warped views? What am I missing that makes this OK for Obama?

I have been dismayed over this issue, to say the least. First, let me address it on a personal level. I did, in fact, leave a church in part due to our pastor parading a local Congressman in front of the congregation during the time of an up-coming election. There was back-patting by the pastor, a vocal affirmation about what a fine man this was and a not-so-subtle statement from the Congressman as he addressed the congregation. He was stumping in my church! No, it was not a blatant political rant but the message was clear. The man we respected as our pastor and spiritual leader had given his endorsement to this Congressman. Charisma exuded from both men. I gazed around the church and saw smiles abounding. What a captive audience this Congressman had, with at least 900 people in attendance. Separation of church and state? Ha! I felt offended, angry and sad that a pastor whom I had admired had allowed politics to seep in where God’s message was supposed to flow. I doubted that God was in charge here and waited for the lightning I was sure would strike.

Perhaps I am naive. This may go on in many churches, but I was there to be fed spiritually, not force-fed politically. Pastors hold amazing power and that should never be abused. In fairness, though, I harken back to the time when the church was the center of the community. How many times have we heard that if only churches took back that center, families would remain in-tact and our young people would be more grounded? Instead of looking to the government for help, the church was the the community’s pillar and its guiding force.

Well, let’s admit it. Times have changed. What to say about Obama? Certainly after attending this church of Reverend Wright for twenty years, the Senator has heard these messages. Since he has been grooming himself for public service for many of those years, how savvy is he? He admired Wright enough to use his line, “The Audacity of Hope” as the title for his second book. In fairness, I was taught long ago regarding pastors, to “keep your eyes off the man” for he is only a man and can fail. In other words, don’t put your faith in the preacher but in God’s word. I was also taught that God can work even through flawed men to send His message. Wright’s messages, however, from those I have read have been divisive and inflammatory. Add that to a charasmatic preacher and you have a prescription for eliciting rote hallelujah’s.

As a child of the sixties and as one who fought for civil rights, I have had strong hopes for Obama as a fruition of those hard-fought battles by white folks like me. Many times we were shoulder to shoulder with blacks. I want and need him to renounce the unrighteousness of Reverend Wright and to take a strong stance. Until he does that, I will hold the “amen” on my vote.

Just wanted to let you know that I wish I could vote in PA this year. I am now in Ohio and we already voted. Vote early and often tomorrow. Get rid of the ones who gave us the war that totally devastated the Dollar and our reputation in the world. W is the worst president we ever had. We have to do better. We did our part, now it is up to Pennsylvania.

    Cheers,
    Bill

Here’s to you, Bill! Perhaps you would consider addressing some of our more conservative commentators who believe that liberals hate America.
